Volunteer with Alive!

  • Save the Date for the ALIVE!

Coming up on November 2–6 and 21, 2020 there is an Interfaith Fall Harvest Packing Project. Community organizations and groups are welcome to participate, volunteer, and donate. ALIVE! Is encouraging member congregations to pack 150 bags each for distribution this fall and winter. We need volunteers to pick up food bags and help sort and bag food. Please contact Pastor Deborah (Deborahporras@vaumc.org) if you can help.

  • Christmas Gifts for Nursing Home Friends

Despite the difficulties of Covid-19, we plan to try to make the Christmas wishes of our friends at Birmingham Green Nursing Home come true again this year.  However, like most of the rest of our lives, it will be slightly different!  Please shop for these 6 dear people on this Amazon wish list.  Items will be sent directly to Vivian Miller and, once purchased, will show on the list as no longer needed! The deadline for gifts to be at Vivian Miller’s home is November 30th.

Thanks for showing God’s love this holiday season!

Ongoing Needs for ALIVE!

  • ALIVE! House needs volunteers to help with maintenance on an on-going basis. Work/repairs generally include plumbing, electrical, and pest control, as is typical of any residence. Most repairs can be handled at a scheduled time and generally are needed about once a month, but the volunteer may also need to be able to assist on an emergency basis or provide advice over the phone (This happens a few times a year). Looking for 2 - 4 volunteers who do similar work in their own homes. There is also a need for a small area drywall repairs.

  • ALIVE! House will continue its Saturday reading program (from 11:30 to 12:30)  and is adding Wednesday evenings (7:00 to 8:00 pm) to the schedule. Young volunteers are encouraged.

  • Most needed donations : all purpose cleaning products, bleach, diapers (4-6 and girls 2T-5T).

  • Contact: Betsy Sciavolino, ALIVE! House Director at esciavalino@alive-inc.org or 703-684-1430 or 301-830-8146.

  • The Child Development Center has a continuing need for one or more people with “handyman” skills to help with small maintenance projects around the Center. Anyone interested should contact Kathie Boling at 703-548-9255, kboling@alive-inc.org.

  • The furniture program is looking for 2-3 additional drivers (no lifting involved) and 4 additional warehouse/schedulers. Job descriptions:

    • Warehouse/scheduler: Field emails from potential donors and social workers (regarding families in need). Call families to confirm. 90% of work is online. Arrange two 8 stop schedules.
